LONG LIFE EXHIBITION AT THE WELLINGTON GALLERY
Waterloo, Sydney
Long Life, 2020
I was introduced to finely hand painted china and porcelain as a trainee footman at New Zealand's Government House in the 1970's. Aesthetic beauty refined and detailed became the cornerstone of many interests in my life; this fundamental element is explored as I render the fine details of objects in the McLeod's Antique collection.
With immense gratitude to McLeod's for allowing me to endlessly explore their collection, I chose pieces whose shapes and intricate patterns provided the desired aesthetics for this series. I reimagined the history of each piece and challenged myself to breathe new life into each piece while meticulously capturing every nuanced detail on canvas.
Daily objects were often hand painted to give them special significance. My paintings interrupt our world of mass-produced generic items. In creating this body of work, I hope to honour the artists from a different time long before me who created these incredible pieces.
This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Joan Swarbrick
