The Barn 2020

The Barn 2020

The brief for The Barn was it should appear within the property as a simple rural building, unassuming and natually blending into the surrounding landscape. The large traditional barn doors conceal the comfortable and surprisingly spacious accomodation provided for my clients family and guests. The sensational high raked ceiling and white interior is breezy in the summer months, yet cosy and warm in the winter. Thoughtful sourcing and aquisition of pieces antique furniture provided much needed storage, a nod to the past and a sense of escaping the pressures of modern day life. This is a classic space, simple and uncomplicated. I foresee the building will age beautifully and provide a memorable resting place for future generations of my clients family.

The Griffith Teas building is an iconic warehouse building in the Sydney CBD. The transformation from an empty warehouse to apartments was undertaken by Popov Architects and my clients purchased two apartments off the plan in 2015.

This project has taken 2 years and I began in 2015, making changes and improvements to the original floor plan. I liaised with Cornerstone Developers and Popov Architects during the redesign process. Efficient use of space and storage has been paramount with my clients moving from a much bigger space. I made significant changes in the kitchen area to accommodate a 2 metre wide walk-in pantry-scullery, a larger oven and more refrigeration space. I was able to gain a 3rd bedroom by taking some space off of the living room without compromising the overall living space.

The apartment has a north-east aspect and is flooded with long periods of natural light. The ceiling is the original warehouse structure and the interior of the external walls is exposed brickwork. It was important not to distract from these original features. The colour palette I had chosen is soft and misty, with shades of greys, taupes and pale greens and aquas.

This was a complete interior project as the owners bought with them none of their existing furniture or fittings. It has been a chance to design several bespoke pieces of furniture to fit into allocated spaces. This has been an incredibly exciting project and to see my clients living and enjoying this unique apartment brings me enormous satisfaction. Thank you to Deanne and Peter for believing in me and giving me my first full-scale project.
